Babar Azam-led Central Punjab raced to victory over inexperienced Northern in the final of Quaid-E-Azam Trophy 2019-20.
Central Punjab entered the final as favorites. The most reliable batting unit of the competition had ten players in the line-up who had represented Pakistan at the highest level.
Northern came out to bat in the 1st innings against the strong Central Punjab side. As expected, the batting line-up was bundled up for 254. Only Faizan Riaz (116) and Rohail Nazir (80) could hold in the middle.
For Central Punjab, Faheem Ashraf picked up five wickets. Aizaz Cheema and Bilal Asif picked up two and three scalps, respectively.
Central Punjab batted Northern out of the game. Salman Butt laid the platform with a solid 74. Azhar Ali (119) and Babar Azam (69) made sure that their side scores big in the first innings. After their departure, in came the destroyer, Umar Akmal, who struck a fluent double hundred (218), which meant Central Punjab declared on a mammoth 675/8d.
In reply to the mountainous lead, Northern couldn’t keep going and perished for 405. Central Punjab registered an inning victory over the shaky Northern side.
Haider Ali looked fluent for his 121, but couldn’t save his side from a humiliating defeat at the hands of a strong Central Punjab side.
Bilal Asif picked up eight wickets in the 2nd innings to finish the game with 11 scalps, which earned him the man of the match award.
